Description: What’s that, you say? A Dayton newspaper ranked among the Cincinnati print elite? But it’s hard to avoid. After all, the daily built a printing plant just a few minutes north of West Chester, with an announced intention to dominate Warren and Butler County—and perhaps Sharonville and other of the north-central suburbs soon after.Don’t underestimate the Dayton paper’s challenge to the Enquirer for regional dominance. This is a daily newspaper that won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for public service (for groundbreaking coverage on the shoddy practices of military doctors nationwide). The editors have already lured popular Cincinnati columnist Mary McCarty and local mystery author Jim DeBrosse (see the Close-up in the Libraries chapter) onto their staff. And the paper’s Cincinnati Reds coverage is generally considered superior to anything the Cincinnati papers can offer. The Dayton Daily News is owned by Cox Communications, a company founded a century ago by a guy who went on to become governor of Ohio.
