City: Austin, TX
Category: Annual Events & Festivals
Telephone: (512) 478-0098, (866) GO-AUSTI
Address: 301 Congress Ave.

Description: Throughout Feb there are numerous celebrations and events relating to African-American history. In the very early days of the city, almost a quarter of the city’s residents were African Americans, some 155 out of 856 people living in the city. The Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau (telephone and website listed above) produces the Austin African-American Visitors Guide, listing historic sites, cultural facilities, clubs, churches, and a guide to Austin’s historic African-American neighborhoods. The guide can be picked up at the visitor center, and visitors also can request more information online indicating specific areas of interest, including African-American history and culture in Austin. Another great resource for events and celebrations in the African-American community is the Carver Branch Library, 1161 Angelina St., (512) 974-1010, www.austinlibrary.com.
