Description: The mission of the United States–Mexico Border Health Commission (BHC) is to provide international leadership to optimize health and quality of life along the U.S.–Mexico border. The commission, which is comprised of federal health secretaries, prominent community health professionals from Mexico and the U.S., and the chief health officers of the 10 borders states, provides the necessary leadership to develop coordinated binational actions to improve health and quality of life along the border in both countries. The BHC was created as a binational health commission in July 2000, with the signing of an agreement by the Secretary of Health and Human Services of the United States and the Secretary of Health of Mexico.The BHC serves all the people who reside within 100 kilometers, or 62 miles, on either side of the international boundary line, including six Mexican states and four states in the U.S. (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California). The commission is comprised of 26 members in two sections, one for each country, which have 13 members each.
