  • Description:
  • Nine women came together in 2003 to purchase and renovate the historic 1887 brick building on the waterfront in Eastport, which now houses The Commons, a unique gallery featuring the work of 90+ local artists and artisans. We are a place-based gallery, many of whose artists use local materials to create one-of-a-kind jewelry, paintings, silk jackets, carved birds, fish and whales, and traditional Passamaquoddy (Native American) baskets. We are open year-round and welcome visitors anytime. From Maine's coastal U.S. Route 1, in the town of Perry, turn east onto Route 190 for 7 miles and you will discover Eastport. The Commons is right on Water Street next to the statue of the fisherman, and opposite Wadsworth & Sons, the nation's oldest ship's chandlery, established in 1818. We are located on the water, with splendid views over Passamaquoddy Bay to Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada, two miles away. In addition to the gallery on the ground floor, we have two elegant, fully-furnished suites on the second floor which we rent out by the week to visitors in every season. It's a chance for you to leave your cares behind and enjoy the comfort of having everything within a short distance: first-class restaurants, whale-watching cruises, museums, library, cultural events, hiking, kayaking, fishing in salt and fresh water, and shopping for every taste and budget: antiques, souvenirs, fresh lobsters and much more. A car ferry will take you to New Brunswick where there are many more opportunities for sightseeing and sightdoing, including a tour of the Roosevelt estate on Campobello Island, shopping and dining in St. Andrews, hiking trails and some of the highest tides in the world. There are many reasons to visit Eastport and explore the surrounding area. Contact us for more information by calling 207-853-4123 or emailing info@thecommonseastport.com
