I went to crop dusting school here in 1957. It had two hangers, one for Johnny's private aerobatics plane and the other for repairs. Repair facilities for both engine and wing and fuselage repairs. After finishing the school Johnny hired me to work general maintenance and service. Besides a small salary I got free flying time. As I had nothing better to do that summer I thought it was a good deal. There were a few crop dusting planes, (Stearman), a Piper Cub and a couple of private planes at tie-downs. Quite a busy little airport at the time. Every (almost) Sunday morning we'd go out to the airfield and Johnny would take his plane up and do aerobatics. He'd put on quite a show. He was the East Coast Aerobatics champion three years in a row. Four new pilots went down that summer, two were killed, one broke his back and I walked away from mine. One day a witch was across the street chanting and shaking her rattle and put a curse on the airport. Approx. one week later a tornado came through the airport. (I guess she taught flying was for the birds). (Pun intended). One Sunday the chief pilot asked if I wanted to go with him to an airport in Arkansas to pick up a part. After picking up the part we outran the airport police and took off before they caught us so we didn't have to pay the landing fee. On the way back to Merigold he asked me if it would be OK if he landed on a sandbar in the middle of the Mississippi river, which we did. Back in Merigold we told some of the other students what we did. One didn't believe us so I dumped my hat, full of sand, in his lap. I got the sand from the sandbar. Then he believed us. It was quite a summer and an experience.

Interesting story by Norbert. I got my commercial at Merigold school of Aeronautics in 1966.Johnny Door was primarily my night time and aerobatic instructor (220 Stearman). I kept in contact over the years. Johnny's plane was just sold and went to the Dallas area.
The airfield itself will most likely be plowed under and become farmland unless some unexpected miracle happens. I am still looking for stories and photos/videos to use in an updated " Johnny Dorr Aviator" book.
