American River Parkway

The American River Parkway stretches out for 23 miles along the beautiful American River west of Sacramento from Nimbus Dam to its confluence with the Sacramento River. It has been designated both a State and National Wild and Scenic River Route. Initially conceived in 1915, the parkway was intended as a continuous green zone on the riverside, providing recreation and outdoor activities for local residents.

It was not until 1949, however, that the River Beautification Commission was formed and began developing plans to beautify and develop recreational areas on the American River. It took until 1960 for a master plan to be approved and land acquisitions to begin. Today, an estimated eight million visitors come to the American River Parkway annually.

Among the many attractions along the way are 125 acres of maintained turf and 82 miles of developed trails, including a 33-mile bike trail and an equestrian trail. In 2008, a new Camp Fire Girls parcel was opened.

Dogs are allowed if attended on a leash, and consumption of alcohol is permitted in certain areas, including group picnic areas if an alcohol permit has been obtained. Park areas are open between sunrise and sunset. Self-registration of vehicles is required for parking; the day-use fee is $5.
