California Capitol

Today, this historic building serves as the state capital building, but it has a long history that attracts those with architectural interests to Sacramento. The building is unique because it is the location of both the seat of state government and a museum. Visitors get the experience of seeing government in action while also exploring the history of the state. The building is open weekdays from 8 am until 5 pm and weekends from 9 am until 5 pm. Admission is free of charge. The building is a popular destination for school groups and field trips which can be attended by 10 to 35 people. Guided tours are free but must be scheduled in advance. Public tours are conducted every hour between 10 am and 4 pm. The basement of the capital building is home to a theatre that shows films everyday, which is a great way to begin or end your tour. Those visiting the capital building will notice many fine architectural features including the grand staircases that lace through the building, the Poppy Mosaic, which is a marble mosaic on the second floor of the building, and the Great Seal of California, a stained glass version of the official seal embedded in the sealing near the entrances of the Senate and Assembly Chambers.
