California Military Museum

Located just a few steps from the State Capital, the California Military Museum is home to some of the most important memorabilia in the state's history. The museum opened in 1990 and exhibits and a research center for those who want to experience the military history of the state. The museum is home to more than 30,000 artifacts, as well as an official archives and a library. There are five satellite locations for the museum in Fresno, Monterey County, Orange County, San Diego, and San Luis Obispo. The intention of the museum is to remind citizens of the sacrifices of the soldiers who fight to defend the country and keep it free. The education and outreach programs have a variety of options for those who want to learn more about the rich history of California soldiers. There used to be a Speakers Program, but it came to an end. The School Visitation Program offers classes a change to tour the main museum in Sacramento. Programs are suitable for elementary through college aged students. The World War II Oral History Program brings the experiences of the Second World War to life for those who want to learn more. Those not affiliated with an official group may enjoy the amateur historians program that allows students and history buffs to help with history projects.
