Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park

Just a block or two west of the California State Capitol, the Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park welcomes visitors from around the world to explore a prominent gathering center for government and business leaders.

The four-story, 19,000-square-foot mansion, built between 1856 and 1872, has a rich history and serves as the official state reception site for dignitaries to the State of California. In the early years of California government, the Leland Stanford Mansion served as resident to three California governors: Leland Stanford (founder of Stanford University), Frederick Low, and Henry Height. It has also been visited by Rutherford B. Hayes, former President of the United States along with General Sherman. The state of California procured the mansion in 1978, and it has since been named a National Historical Landmark.

Visitors may only experience the Leland Stanford Mansion through guided tours. The mansion opens for guided tours from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Tours run hourly, and large groups need to make advance reservations.

The Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park lies south of the Sacramento International Airport about 10 miles and is convenient to other nearby tourist sites: Governor's Mansion State Historic Park, Pony Express Monument, and California Automobile Museum.
