Silverado Museum

The non-profit Silverado Museum was established in 1969 to provide a lasting tribute to the life and works of famed American author Robert Louis Stevenson. Today housing one of the world's finest collections related to the writer, it is located in the heart of Sonoma Wine Country near the slopes of Mount St. Helena, where the literary giant spent his honeymoon in 1880.

Featured here are displays related to Stevenson's classic books, including Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and A Child's Garden of Verses. One especially interesting item is a fine press first edition of "The Silverado Squatters," an account of the author's stay in an abandoned bunkhouse at the old Silverado Mine.

The Silverado Museum was the brainchild of Norman H. Strouse, an avid collector of Stevensoniana. In 1979, a permanent home for the artifacts he gifted was found at the new St. Helena Public Library Center. A special wing was constructed just this purpose. To date, it has been visited by travelers from every U.S. state and some 81 foreign countries.

The Silverado Museum is located at 1490 Library Lane, St. Helena, California 94574-1143. The public is admitted free of charge from noon to 4pm each Tuesday through Saturday; organized groups can arrange special tours between 9:30am and 11:45am. Scholars and researchers may use the museum's materials for academic projects; scheduled appointments are required with a research fee of $15 per hour.
