Google has partnered with American Airlines and Breakthrough Energy to leverage AI in minimizing the climate impact of contrails. Contrails contribute to around 35% of aviation's global warming effects. These clouds both reflect sunlight and trap heat, with a net warming effect. Google's AI system helps pilots choose routes that reduce contrail formation. In a six-month test with 70 flights, contrail production was reduced by 54%. However, flights avoiding contrails burned 2% more fuel, but when scaled, this could be as low as 0.3% across all flights.
