From what I've heard, the former mayor helped move them here from the NYC area and that they are renovating houses in Hamilton Hill. I haven't heard that the majority are illegal.
I thank the four of you for your informative replies to my post. Somehow, one of the replies took me from Schenectady to New York City. After reading 7 pages of posts and replies on the Guyanese immigrants in New York, and adding them to my direct contacts and some working relationships with Schenetady Guyanese, I have concluded that these people are very rude. They have no intentions of conforming to the culture of the U.S.A. Yes, they want to avai themselves of our land of opportunity. They pledge alegence to their own flag. listen to their own music. Eat their own food. Even keep their own language. Ignore the fact that English is the language of the U.S.A. Our Flag is Red,White, and Blue, stars and stripes. We celebrate the Fourth of July, and our National Anthem is the Star Spangeled Banner.

Umm, that doesn't make sense, as English is the official language of Guyana.
Also. from what it looks like, the people came by way of NYC. So, I don't understand what you are getting at.
Cissy8, Wow I can't believe you just posted that. I thought it was rude. I haven't had that experience when I've met folks from Guyana. I think maybe as anyone new to this country your heart is still there, thinking about having left your homeland, and friends and family behind. When I was in MA and had lots of Brazilian neighbors, they were very much the same way as the Guyanese are here. They still love their homeland but realize their future is here. My Brazilian neighbors flew their flag, listened to their music and made their food. They were a different culture and I didn't understand since I've lived in the US my whole life, but they were some of the friendliest neighbors we ever had. They would have huge parties in their yard, great food, lots of drinks, great music. My husband and I would be the only white people there. They made us feel very welcome. I'm sure the Guyanese would respond the same way if they were my neighbors now. I like have a little pieces of other cultures in our city. The diversity is what makes life interesting.
Life is too short, lets all try to show a bit of love and tolerance....
