I am planning to retire early and move to NY state for a year, possibly longer.
I'd like to spend the year visiting friends and family all over NY state, including NYC...
Seeking a centralized location which takes me to the area between the Hudson Valley and Albany.
Please suggest a reasonably vibrant (I know the term is relative) area south of Albany where I could have access to some of the benefits of being near Albany (doctors, dentists, shopping, restaurants) while also not dealing with heavy traffic and having access to trains and buses for day trips to Manhattan.
Hudson is an option, given the criteria in the OP.
While not south, Rensselaer across the Hudson from Albany has a train station and perhaps something just outside of the city would be a happy medium. That way, you can go into Albany or even Troy for any events, nightlife, etc., while having train access to go to NYC.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Saratoga Springs is about a half hour north of Albany and has an Amtrak station. If I were going to spend one year here this is where I would live.
Otherwise, try Delmar, NY, a suburb just south of Albany. Very nice community.
If you can afford a nice area of Hudson that would work otherwise Delmar all the way.
Hudson is pretty tired except for Warren St which has been taken over by weekenders from the city and mucho expensive shops. And it's like 30+ miles to Albany. Definitely Delmar area.

On this side and if you don't mind more suburban areas nearby, East Greenbush could be another option.
