Saturday marks opening of ski season at Sandia Peak

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M- Sandia Peak will open for the ski season on Saturday.
The resort expects to have 75% trails open on opening day.
The ski area plans on staying open every day through Jan. 5. Starting Jan. 10, it will be open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays through mid-March.
Good to know, the ski area seems to be pretty neglected by Abruzzo and in need of updating compared to his other resort in Santa Fe. You sometimes wonder if he's planning to close it permanently as a ski area and just have the mountain coaster in the summer that's in the planning stages now.

I don't know about that...they just spent a ton of money completely redeveloping the restaurant at the top of the chairlift, after all.
I do agree that the ski area is definitely no longer the focus of his Sandia operations, though. I think that Abruzzo sees the writing on the wall and realizes that if the climate trends of the last 20 years continue (less winter snow, warmer winters), a ski area in the Sandias is probably not a winning long-term proposition. How many full seasons has Sandia had in the last decade? I can only think of one or two. He's probably looking past the ski area at least a little bit and focusing on things like the restaurant, the tram and (eventually) the mountain coaster that will continue to draw tourists regardless of whether there's snow on the ground.

Well the restaurant is more about the Tram, which is year-round, than the ski area, and it was overdue for a remodel anyway. Still, it may have some synergy that will help the ski area. Meanwhile the base lodge with its cafeteria is also in dire need of updating, it looks as if it's straight out of the 1960s (and I don't know what plans he has there). But a lot of skiers/snowboarders in ABQ now just head to Santa Fe or other northern resorts even when Sandia is open because of the outdated chairlifts. Even over 20 years ago there wasn't always a lot of snow and there were late openings but Sandia was very popular and seemed to get a lot more business than in recent years. And yes, climate change is shortening ski seasons at resorts across the globe.
