I haven't been to a chiropractor in years, but one thing I didn't like was when they manipulated my neck with a sharp twist and a crack/pop. I actually tensed with fear whenever they did that.

I understand the chances of getting a stroke or serious complication via manipulation is rare, but at the same time the risk is always there. Six years ago, a model died from a stroke after having her neck manipulated.

Quote:
A 35-year-old man had an unexpected stroke after seeing a chiropractor for neck manipulation and upper back massages, according to a case study in the journal BMJ Case Reports.

He told the doctors who treated him that he'd seen the chiropractor for two weeks before he experienced trouble reading, writing, and talking. After two days of those symptoms, and one day of pain on his right side, a friend expressed concern, so the man went to see a neurologist.

According to his medical history and some brain scans, the man wasn't predisposed to a stroke, leading the doctors to believe his chiropractor visits contributed to the event, they wrote in the case study.

I've had many good experiences with chiropractors, but stopped going a couple years ago due to the same concern. No more cracking for me.

I love it when my chiropractor cracks my neck since that is where I hold the most stress. I've been a patient of hers for many years.

Always get a referral from someone who has gone for years or if you hear of a lot of people going to that doctor. A lot of people at my company are her patients.
