It seems like every other day, I see something on TikTok that teaches me something new about this weird skin suit we call the human body, and — wouldn't ya know it — it's happened again!
This time, it was Ayisha Friedman-NegrÃn's (aka @ayishafrita) TikTok showing how she "properly" cleans her ears by pouring hydrogen peroxide into them. So far, it's been viewed over 14 million times
Those drugstore ear drops contain hydrogen peroxide. However, the hydrogen peroxide sold here is a much weaker solution than some sold overseas so foreigners might injure themselves.
I always used it until a doctor told me not to because of pH issues I think. Instead she gave me another solution that’s every bit as cheap and it’s a 50/50 mix of alcohol and vinegar. It really is the best.
My ear doctor (a qualified, licensed doctor of audiology) recommended that I use normal hydrogen peroxide you can find in the first aid section of the pharmacy for my ears. They get pretty waxy, and that can clog my hearing aids. She said I should do it once a month, and up to once every other week if necessary.
What is the actual procedure? How long does it take and is it messy?
I use a curved syringe that I got from a dentist's office to irrigate a sore spot whenever I got a popcorn kernel stuck between the gum and the tooth. You can get them at Walmart I think and on Amazon, but mostly from your dentist's office or a local veterinarian (they're also used to dose liquid oral meds for cats and dogs)
Put a few CCs of peroxide in the syringe, and turn your head totally to one side (so one ear is facing the ceiling and the other is against your opposite shoulder). Slowly push the plunger with the syringe just resting against the inside fold of your ear (you don't have to put it IN your ear), and let it go, a few drops at a time, down your ear canal.
It'll feel REALLY weird, and sound weird, you'll hear a loud THUMP THUMP THUMP as the air rises and the liquid fills the canal. That's okay, it's a normal thing. When you feel like any more will be too much, stop pushing the syringe, and leave your head that way for a couple more minutes. You'll feel foam forming in your ear canal, and it might itch a little. It's all fine, it's just doing its job.
After a few minutes, lean over the sink and turn your head the other way so the stuff can all pour out. That will also feel REALLY weird, and that's okay too!
Dab your ear with a towel to dry it, and repeat on the other side.
Give both ears a few minutes to dry naturally before putting in hearing aids if you wear them.
You don't have to wipe the insides or do anything else, that's the whole process.
Total amount you put in is around a teaspoon per ear.
I just use a couple drops in each ear when needed - a whole teaspoon full?
