One of my sons is considering Arizona for college but loves fishing. Are there any places in AZ that have good fishing and would be accessible for weekend trip from Greater Phoenix area? We love Arizona but we’ve never looked into fishing there, assuming lakes few and far between. Any insight into fishing in AZ?

Lake Pleasant is not far out northwest of Phoenix. Bartlett Lake and Horseshoe lakes just east of Phoenix. You can google them for lots of info.

I moved here from Oregon 11 years ago. I'm an avid bass fisherman. I wouldn't have moved here without some good water close by.
In the east valley, there are 4 lakes that all have good fishing. Saguaro, Canyon, Apache and Roosevelt Lakes. Saguaro and Canyon Lakes are less than an hours drive from the main ASU campus.
Tempe Town Lake literally borders ASU and has bass and a few other game fish but I've never fished there personally.
The Phoenix area has a surprising amount of lakes close by.
in addition to the lakes mentioned above, Bartlett, Pleasant, San Carlos, Horseshoe and a smattering of others are relatively close by although San Carlos and Horseshoe are currently (for all intents and purposes) dry.
There are also quite a few lakes up in mountains toward Payson (easy 2 hour drive) and Flagstaff (3 hour drive).
There are also lakes on the Colorado river that have good fishing. Lake Havasu and Mohave Lake both have very good smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing.
If he has a few days to kill, Lake Powell is about 4 1\2 hours away and the fishing is off the charts good. My favorite place in the world.

A 67lb1oz Striped Bass was caught in the Colorado River, Arizona in 1997, state record...
I hope they released the fish.

I prefer Trout fishing, and while Arizona's lakes aren't always the best, there are some worth trying out. My best luck for catching Trout has been at Big Lake & Crescent Lake in the White Mountains. The best time of year for catching Trout is in the fall, and then again in the spring. During the summer, the fish usually seek more shaded areas in the water because the sun is too intense for them, so they're not as active.
