This Frontier outage didn't seem to be much of a new item, but this was a seriously extended outage.

And I think this is a good example of why people should think twice before giving up their landlines.

Well...yes and no. POTS landlines are set to be sunset per FCC order 19-72A1. Doesn't mean that they will be shut off en masse, just that ILECs are no longer required to sell Unbundled Network Element (UNE) to their competitors, i.e. CenturyLink, the ILEC in the old Bell 14 state region, is no longer required to sell copper loops to Frontier for use as POTS/PSTN systems. I don't think it will have any effect on existing services but, as most carriers turn to fiber vs. copper, no one is building out more copper facilities. They are effectively removing copper and replacing it with more reliable fiber connections.

On the flip side, most carriers' PSTN capabilities are backended by some sort of SIP/VoIP solution except for the regulated ILECs that have to, up until August of this year, maintain the PSTN systems.

This happens in areas more than you know, seems the news finally caught a hold of one of those outages.

The troubles began around 3 p.m. on Saturday, when someone shot a crucial fiber line in three places across 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) near Woodruff in Navajo County.

I love how the police chief conflates bad service in the past with this recent act of "sabotage" (ABC15's word).

POTS = plain old telephone service... (that old black phone with the rotary dial on the kitchen wall)
ILEC = incumbent local exchange company (or carrier) ...the Telco that serves your community
PSTN = public switched telephone network... all the wires and the central offices
VoIP = voice over internet protocol... makes voice calls over a data line, no POTS needed

As in someone took a gun and fired bullets at the line? If so, that person is liable for the death of the individual who was not able to get medical att, I would think.
