I don't know about by 2015, but MSA Atlanta will have more people than Philadelphia within a decade or so, despite the economy slowing down. The trend of population growth in the sunbelt states continues ...

Even if Atlanta does surpass Philly in population I bet many people will continue to think of Philadelphia as much larger. There's sort of an inherent bias in the media which implies that major things occur in the North and the South is just sort of "down there" somewhere in the piney woods. In the last election, for instance, I twice heard reporters talking about the results turning on "the huge states like New Jersey and Michigan." Georgia is actually larger than New Jersey and not much smaller than Michigan.

I knew Philly was forever doomed when Dance Party USA was cancelled in the early '90s. It was a terrible loss to the city. And the ramifications can still be felt today.

Within 25 years Atlanta will have about 12.3 million people and it will be the 3rd largest metro in the country behind #2 Los Angeles at 14 million and Dallas-Ft Worth at a whopping 18 million. New York will fall to 4th.

It is more because Philly is largely a distant suburb of New York City. It is less than 100 miles away and largely urban between.

True that. It isn't about the economy so much as it is about the fact it is 70 degrees and sunny here and it is 38 in Philly. People are naturally inclined to want to live where it is warm most or all the year.
