MARTA bill clears Georgia Senate with surprise change - Atlanta Business Chronicle

Quote:
...While doing away with the 50/50 requirement was the key provision in legislation the state House of Representatives passed early last month, the Senate Transportation Committee added a surprise amendment that would let MARTA ask voters in the areas it serves to increase the sales tax from the current cap of 1 percent to 1.5 percent...

As much as I was in support of the 50 50 requirement, this is a fair compromise. I hope they get to work on this soon!

Let's put it up for a vote in Gwinnett and Cobb already!

..and think beyond. Where does everyone think Douglas, Henry and Rockdale would sit on a MARTA vote?

I would like to think they'd be for it, but I'm thinking they aren't ready yet. Henry would probably be most likely to vote yes.

I'm sure many know (at this point) that, as a Gwinnett resident, I would vote YES for MARTA service here without hesitation. South Gwinnett in particular is majority minority and many depend on public transportation. I'm quite sure it would pass here.

Perhaps after the new stadium is constructed and Cobb residents sit in ever more traffic, they'll come to the other side of their senses.
I think it'd be close at this point though. Even there.

They barely pass a SPLOST for their own county.

Traffic was backed up from 575 N all the way to Midtown yesterday until almost 7:30pm

It would pass easily in both counties if most of the $$$ went to rail and they had a rail map of the stops available prior to the vote

Why hasn't MARTA done this yet?

Or have they? I think I vaguely remember a map for Gwinnett going to Gwinnett Arena, but I don't recall one for Cobb.

Why spend the money for something in a county that doesn't fund MARTA?
