Hello all! I really really need some desperate and detailed help.

I will be studying abroad this fall 2010 at either of these schools.
I am torn between these two.. one day I will decide on Sydney and Melbourne the next... Without any prior experience, I am having a hard time choosing. And now, the deadline is in couple days... =(

First about myself, I am 21 years old male from NYC. I am also Korean/Asian. I can safely say that I've experienced most of what 'colleges' have to offer, from parties to student groups.

I've never been to Australia and after looking up a bit of stuff, it seems that Sydney is 'generally' better than Melbourne.

So here's the problem. USydney is about 6,000 dollars more expensive than UMelbourne. Is the extra cost of 6,000 dollars worth it for me to choose Sydney over Melbourne? I am currently 90% at Melbourne only due to the cost.

I am looking for the generic Australian experience. The beaches, the parks, the hikings, and etc. I am from NYC so I know the city life but that isn't that important to me (I am not looking to party and check out clubs everyday... maybe once in a while). I think I am actually looking for a university that has a laid-back Cali feel to it...

Also, as a Korean, I would hope to be in a race friendly environment...

So please, if you have/are attended either of these universities, let me know how it is to attend and list the pros and cons...

ALSO I ALMOST FORGOT: How is the weather at either of these places during mid July until end of November? Is July there considered cold winter and do I need jackets??? When does the weather become 'spring-ish?'

Thank you in advance!!!!!!!!

Firstly, what are you studying? I know both are very prestigious so education-wise either would be top-notch (I shudder to think of the fees you're paying! Unless it's an exchange program). If you like beaches Sydney is obviously a better option, but flights between Melbourne and Sydney are like really cheap too. Maybe do some research on the two cities and decide which one sounds better to you.

Hi,

My major is Cinema. My cinema professor told me Melbourne has a good cinema department.

The thing is, Melbourne sounds BAD compared to Sydney...
Can I still have weather friendly fun in Melbourne?? I mean how much worse is the weather and the beaches compared to Sydney????

The fees aren't extremely expensive, considering that both schools are private but I attend a public university and the gap is quite large indeed. (Not an exchange program)

Bad how? The weather? Yes Melbourne's weather is a little drearier but really it's not as bad as people say.

In other respects Melbourne is the equal of Sydney. Victoria has some nice beaches but the water is colder.

Both would be good but Melbourne is probably better for cinema and the arts in general.

If you don't get a lot of response here's some food for thought. People get annoyed when they see Junior Members asking about life in Australia's cities. There are several threads discussing these cities. I'd first do an advance search and ask specific questions from what you find..
