I thought this was some impressive driving. He spent the second half of the Duel making his car three lanes wide with no help.

I did think the cooperation of the Gibbs drivers was lacking a little. As the race got down to it, they started to seem to lose patience with each other and leaving each other out to dry a little. Hence Hamlin eventually going back when the incident with Danica happened.

An impressive evening for Hendrick motorsports, but it could be different Sunday. Still, how often does Hendrick not show up with good cars? It's a powerhouse operation.

If you're gonna have qualifying races fine but forget the sham of pole position group qualifying.

No matter who wins we just have to wait for next week for the real racing to start.
i fully agree with you on the qualifying system that nascar has put in place, i think it stinks to high heaven. i have also been lukewarm on the qualifying races, even at daytona. its like having a national holiday, its just another reason to have a race, but its fun to watch.

the problem with the gibbs teams is that they have a load of drivers that are generally hungry for win at what ever cost, where as the hendrick teams are more into supporting their team mates both on and off the track.

Jr's car looked pretty fast in practice. Would be nice to see him win on Sunday.

I hope the Cup race is better than the truck race was; they pretty much stay in line until the last three laps. Also have to wander about what the cold weather expected will mean.

Both Busch brothers will miss the Daytona 500. Kurt Busch is suspended indefinitely, and it looks like Kyle broke his leg in the Xfinity Series race today.

yep, its going to be tough for kyle for the next couple of weeks. even if he is able to compete, he will still be feeling the effects of the wreck.

on a lighter note, congrats to ryan reed for his first career win.

They don't know how long he will be out yet.

Kyle Busch taken to hospital following wreck during Xfinity Series race at Daytona - ESPN

But it was an excellent race today overall. Glad to see a Roush Ford get back to victory lane here.

There is no excuse for that part of Daytona not to have a safer barrier. I don't like Kyle Busch but if I were Joe Gibbs racing I'd be absolutely furious right now.

Wondering who they're going to put in the car..

Gotta figure Busch will be out 2 to 4 weeks at a minimum.. Something's gotta be broken for him to be out of the car.. Whether it's ankle or lower leg remains to be seen.. Had it been the left leg.. He might have started and gave way to a relief driver.. Of course.. Applause to NASCAR for him having the ability to miss races and still compete for the championship.

I'm betting on Erik Jones being the replacement. Did well in the Xfinity race today.. Not a good result, but drove well. No way they put Suarez in there after him tearing up 2 cars in 5 hours today. So, Jones is their only option within the team.. Which is what Gibbs likes to do.

If they go outside the organization.. Mike Wallace is not available.. He'd be the best option. They might wind up with JJ Yeley.. Ties to the organization, and about all that's there. I mean, sure, you say there's plenty of other options, but.. Not really when you consider that neither Ford or Chevy will let one of their drivers in a Toyota.

Look at the Toyota drivers in the Xfinity race who aren't in the cup race.. David Starr, Eric McClure, Jones, Blake Koch, JJ Yeley, Cale Conley, Justin Marks, Scott Lagasse and Suarez.

Toyota drivers who DNQed for the 500 are Jeb Burton (Outside shot) and Marks.

If he's out an extended period.. Say 4-6 weeks.. There's 2 options that I can see.. Jones or Bobby Labonte(Ok, i'm biased here).. Bobby is driving plate races only with GoFAS, which is Ford.. So he likely isn't under any form of contract with Ford that would prevent him running for another manufacturer. But, he has NBC commitments.

So.. I'm putting my money on Jones being the replacement. With about a 10% chance that they put Jeb Burton in for the 500, then Jones for additional races. And a very, very minimal chance of Jones or Burton for the 500 then Labonte for the rest. And then, maybe a 5% chance that they go with someone out of left field.. Like Reutimann happens to be in the garage or something.

Edit.. I forgot that Yeley made the 500 and is full time in Cup. So, he's out. Toyota is lean in depth at the moment. Don't think they should have let Bubba Wallace leave.. Not that they really had a huge choice, but..
