for $2K, you are probably looking at a car with 120-150K + miles. Typically with cars like that you will need to have $500-1000 and set a aside and be mechanically handy for all the things you are going to replace that naturally wear out with time like struts, belts, hoses, etc.

Under $2k cars don't have to be boring. Besides my F150 I mentioned above my GF wanted a sporty convertible. I picked up a 2000 Mustang V6 for $1000 a few years ago and it has been very reliable and east to maintain. 130k miles, no big deal...it will be worth that in parts if it ever dies!

I sold an '02 Suzuki Aerio to a neighbors friend, and like me, he has had no problems with it. Cheap, plastic everywhere, but also a chain instead of a belt and absolutely bulletproof. I advertised it for 2,000 but took 1,600 and a nice bicycle.
I would recommend any Suzuki product to anyone who requires reliability over anything else.

Another good suggestion. Bulletproof engines with or without the supercharger.

You can get decent pickup trucks for $2000 all day long. Mid 90s Chevy S10 is good and that 4.3L V6 has adequate power and few issues. You can probably save some money if it's a manual transmission model.

A non-turbo Mitsubishi 3000 GT or Dodge Stealth. Buy one from an older, responsible owner, not from some kid who saw "Fast and Furious" too many times. There are many listed for sale, often with under 100k miles. The motors in those things (the non turbo) will run forever and the cars are safe as tanks. I've know of one that was in a rollover accident and the driver just climbed out without a scratch. I have a 1993 Dodge Stealth non turbo with 228,000 miles on the original engine and it still runs like a new car.
