The mechanic told me this morning he would have the car ready by 3 p.m. When I called, he said he's still waiting for the starter to be delivered and in the meantime, he's "topped off all the fluids" which I didn't ask for, and tightened up a hose clamp.

I'm feeling like I'm getting ripped off.

Not at all.
Be sure to thank mechanic for topping off fluids.

As Click and Clack used to say. Take some cookies to the mechanic. Makes a world of difference.

Did you ask for a rebuilt starter or a new starter? Or you don't have a clue?

That starter is available remanufactured for about $75, new is about $120. I have replaced many starters and it should take less than an hour, at the rate charged around here that's about $125, so total $245. Your estimate is a little high but I wouldn't consider it a ripoff by any means. If he ordered the part from Toyota, his price is right in line, because the part will cost a lot more. If he did the topping up and tightening without charge he sounds like a good service provider. He has no control over how long it takes to get a part.

Yes, I asked about a remanufactured starter and he said that I'd be taking a chance. My husband taught me a few things about cars before he died, and I knew the starter would run me around $100 bucks, but I didn't know labor had gone up.

I love my Camry. She's got 166k on it and runs like a charm.

Cookies, huh? lol

Okay, I feel better. He said my fluids were low which I suspect they were, because I hadn't checked them in a while.

Thanks for the response!
