Proposed legislation is to require vehicles sold in California to have something that will limit the vehicle to no more than 10 mph above posted speed limit.

I was going to say something but realized that it would probably be more appropriate for the Politics and Other Controversies forum.

So instead I’ll just say, if this were to pass, it will drive up the cost of new vehicles even more, with the cost of technology required to support this (at least as it is described in the article).

It was in the politics but a moderator deleted the post entirely

Great. Mandate a feature that will increase the cost of new vehicles beyond people's ability to buy.

I have an F-150 and there is a feature (my key) that allows limiting speed to 80 mph. This new proposed requirement if described correctly would force manufacturers to use GPS to accurately determine the speed limit for every stretch of road in California. It would likely require a buyer to subscribe to a GPS system (monthly) AND increase the base cost of a vehicle.

Just keep it as automotive oriented as possible.

This one is nearly free.

PCM: hello garmin, where am I at and what is the speed limit?
Garmin: you are on the 5 at MP 240, speed limit 55mph for the next 40 miles
PCM: right-o old chap!
PCM: hello VSS, what are we doing? and report back every 5 seconds
VSS: 65mph
PCM: set injector bandwidth to 10%, transmission upshift 1 gear

If you have GPS in the car - and most of everything built in the last 10 years does - you can already set 'over speed warning' so it proves the car is always aware of where it is and what is legal.

Just take the next step by taking current-legal speed difference and feeding into the cruise control module

AND, since your phone has GPS on at all times and has a rough awareness of speed, it can blue tooth connect and do the same

now does this mean the OEMS wont go 'harumph harumph harumph, this extreme technology will cost'? (even tho the black box under the seat is already collecting it on a 12-24-36-48 hour memory loop)

heck no.

Just another nail in the coffin of me ever living in Cali. You know, Cali is going to need some serious power grid experts in the next few years, and I'm one, but, no, no way in Hell would I live or work there.

Of course already new cars have too many electronic nannies for my taste. I'm not paying extra for "features" that I don't even want and would have to invest time and effort to disable.

Europe already requires that all new vehicles must have anti-speeding devices.
Did you check prices of German cars?
