And 22mpg in my 1993 5.9l turbo dually. (8800# Empty)
Only 160hp, but tows 40,000# gcvw daily (in mtns). Just fine!

Not saying I agree, that is just how it is. Tacoma is not welcome here.

He lives outside Detroit. And there still are some sore feelings apparently about Toyota and Honda building better cars more profitably, which did cause the demise of the city to a large extent.

Yeah, certainly if I were buying a new car, I wouldn't be concerned at all. If were buying a used vehicle 15-20 years old, I might do some additional due diligence though.
