Another college tuition problem... (apartment, credit, school)

I'm really trying to go to University of Maine (orono) next fall, but I'd also like to claim in-state to take off roughly 15,000$ from what I have to pay. I've looked on their website, and their guidelines seem really ambiguous. I lived here for the entire summer in an apartment, and I've been going to CMCC since then to take care of some credits. I also got a Maine driver's license a few days after moving there, and opened a bank acccount at a Maine Bank of America... how hard do you think it will be to qualify for in-state?

Been here a year yet? Otherwise, give them a call. They are very nice to talk to, and they will have the answers.

I will have, as of June. I gave them a call, and they said that I have to apply as out of state now, but in June I can call and correct it, and that's when they'll start asking for information proving it. It's just that the guidelines on the website weren't very clear, so I just wanted to know if what I have thus far would get me in or if there were more I needed to do.

From the U-Maine website...

"An individual who has lived in the State of Maine, for other than educational purposes, one year prior to registration or application to a campus is considered an in-state student."

Seems pretty clear cut to me. You continue to live in Maine until your year is up, then register as an in-state student. It also states that if you don't qualify for in-state tuition when you register, you must register as out-of-state. Wouldn't surprise me if that rule was bent to let you "re-register" when you meet eligibilty, but that's not what the rule says.

Sounds to me like you have been here since june, but going to school at smcc, so i think you would not qualify.

It would not be hard to argue that the OP was here for other purposes than education -- just say "I wanted to live in Maine, I've been working here (if you have), and I also took a few courses."

Just show them your Maine income tax form. That should do it.
