We had the potential for three Game #163's tomorrow, but two of them have already been rendered moot. The Pirates lost, so no need for them to play the Cardinals for the division title.
The Royals are losing, but it does not matter because the Tigers have already won, so no division title playoff there either.
That leaves the possibility of the one playoff game I don't wish to see come about, the A's having to play the Mariners for the wild card slot.
A's are leading 2-0 over Texas in the bottom of the 4th. Angels at Mariners just getting under way.
Jordan Zimmerman, who if it were not for Clayton Kershaw would be a deserving Cy Young winner, has thrown a no hitter today, 10 strikeouts, one walk in blanking the Marlins.
I am not generally a Johnny Cueto fan, but he earned respect today. He was already around 110 pitches and scheduled to bat in bottom of 8th, game tied 1-1. After a leadoff triple, Cueto came up to bat, despite no opportunity to sacrifice bunt. He wasn't coming out of the game for a pinch hitter until he knew he was going to get his 20th win and Pryce went along with it. Worked the count to 3-2 and got the winning RBI single.
Of course, at the time I could only think that Mike Matheny was going ape-sh*t thinking Pryce was blowing the game on purpose :-)
Since September 14 Nats starting pitchers* are 12-0 with an era under 1. Granted, in that time we've had 3 games against the punchless Braves, 8 vs. the Marlins minus their MVP candidate and 4 against the Mets but that's pretty damn impressive no matter who you are playing. 2012 was the "just happy to be there" team and even though I still have nightmares about that game 5 NLDS I don't think they would've gotten by the Tigers in the World Series anyways. This team is no doubt a legimate World Series team. This is going to be a fun ride! Wish it was Friday already
*= that only counts the starting 5 in the regular rotation, so those couple of starts Blake Treinen had, and the start in the double header Taylor Hill had aren't included in this stretch.
