Before, they used to say that "pitching wins championships", and that having a murderer's row of Aces is the key to titles. It was weird to say this, especially as the Ace-laden Braves made playoffs year after year after year with only one title to show for it. It got worse in the 2010s when we saw the Tigers, Dodgers, Phillies with multiple Cy Young pitchers in their rotation and only to get knocked out by much weaker teams. Now everyone realizes that it's not the aces that win championships, rather a lights-out bullpen
Well, it still sort of is aces, but more so, it's playing smart. This more or less means: knowing not to swing at stupid pitches when the pitcher can't hit the strike zone (e.g., St. Louis, San Francisco = good, Washington, Baltimore = bad), and getting foolish hitters to chase bad pitches. The Phillies lost because they had no offense (game 5 was lost by Halladay 1-0).
lots of empty seats at Fenway day game.....rain? day game attendance always low? kind of weird seeing especially as Red Sox Nation is supposedly so avid.....
