Yea there probably could be several hundreds of posts here if you dwell on the likely racial insensitivity of the name, chop, etc.
But skipping over all that? I think the Atlanta Hammers just sounds better, Native American angle or not.
Plus, it pays the ultimate tribute to the Best and Most Famous ATLANTA Brave ever and emphasizes the Atlanta history of the franchise.
As far as the Milwaukee history counterpoint? I’m sure he played at least a few more years in Atlanta than in Milwaukee at least with the Braves.
Try to keep it PG people and the only other name that should be discussed besides the Braves of course is The Hammers.

The Braves should change their name to The Hammers. Yes or No.-38747fc9-7858-449a-a96f-d67479c79e82.jpeg

I am okay with the Hammers.

People could still do the 90 degree arm flex thing.

Well, the arm swing is a common murder technique used by most peoples throughout history.

But "Braves" refers to native-american people. A Boston owner of the baseball team was a member of Tammany Hall which began as a club inspired by native-american culture but that later became a political organization.

A name change is not necessary because Tammany Hall did help negotiate peace treaties with Creek indians in Florida and Georgia. I suppose we can forget about the history of Cherokee indians shipped off from Rome Georgia.

If a new name is needed then it's the Piedmonts. Atlanta, in early history, was a place where it was possible to turn West after passing the Appalachian Mountains. It couldn't be anything but the Piedmonts. In fact the major airport is in Atlanta because airliners used to fly between visual beacons and so there were beacons running South to Atlanta and West from Atlanta. However, the westward railroad from Atlanta went to West Point Georgia and not to Birmingham which would have continued to skirt the mountains.

As long as the team stays competitive on the field and continues to compete for division and World Series championships along with staying at and/or near the top of MLB in fan attendance (the Braves finished 2nd in attendance in the majors during the 2021 regular season), the Braves name is very likely to stay in place.

The Braves’ core fanbase of white cultural conservatives don’t care about the team’s name and might even enjoy knowing that many progressives seem to be offended by the Braves’ name.

Plus, (particularly because the Braves just won the World Series for the first time in 26 years) many conservatives (who currently view the Braves as their team and MLB as their sport much more than the NFL and the NBA) seem to be rallying around the Braves’ name which they view as being under attack by the progressive left in what appears to be becoming another battle front in the ongoing larger national culture wars.

With the team (and much of MLB) having such a seemingly large following with conservative whites in a deeply conservative part of the country in the interior Southeastern U.S., especially after the 2021 World Series victory, the Braves organization probably would be extremely hesitant to do anything (like getting rid of the Braves name) that might would alienate one of the few demographics (culturally conservative whites) that still seems to be buying tickets to professional baseball games in significant numbers in the 2020’s after decades of an often-dysfunctional MLB often failing to grow the sport with a broader market.

As long as the team continues to be competitive on the field, the Braves likely will have the social and political capital and leverage with potentially nervous corporate sponsors to keep the Braves name along with such seemingly increasingly controversial fan traditions as the Tomahawk chop.

But if the team’s on-field performance ever slides and the team ends up at or near the bottom of the standings and drags their fan attendance figures down it, the Braves probably would no longer have the social/political capital and financial leverage to be able to resist major corporate sponsors who wanted to see a team name change.

In 2020, the Washington Football Team of the NFL (which once dominated the NFL with 3 Super Bowl victories between 1982 and 1991 as the Redskins) very notably succumbed to the growing pressure of major corporate sponsors to vanquish the controversial Redskins team name after years of disappointing on-field performances (including a 3-13 record in 2019) and a major sex scandal in the organization’s front office in which the team’s owner seems to be implicated.

Great points as always, B2R.

It also seems to me there is a difference between Redskins and Braves. Yes, they both refer to Native Americans but Redskins is pejorative whereas Braves connotes courage and fighting spirit.

However, I am no expert on culture. If people find a name offensive, just pick another one.

How about the ATL Rappers? You've got the connection with rapping the ball, as well as rap music, which has become a popular aspect of the Atlanta scene.
