Some nominations, please

Mathewson / Plank in WS
Johnson / Grove
Ford / Feller
Ryan / Hunter or Perry

I saw Spahn / Roberts, Roberts threw a 1-hitter.

In my opinion, definition of "greatest" is "most dominant in his era".

In my lifetime, of the games I have seen in person or on TV, I would say the World Series matchup in 1963, Sandy Kofax against Whitey Ford.

Mel Allen and Vin Scully were the announcers, and I had bronchitis so was out of school (4th grade) that whole week. Back then they had all day games, and we only had a black and white TV.

This happens more often than you think.. I mean, I couldn't remember the specifics.. But, I searched Greg Maddux vs Orel Hershiser..

Best I can find, they met twice, and both were great games. 1989, which.. One could argue was prior to Maddux's peak, Maddux won 1-0

and again in game 1 of the 1995 world series, which Maddux won 3-2 on a 2 hitter..

One could argue that Hershiser was on the downside of his career at that point

Of course, with Maddux.. Like there was anything OTHER than a peak to his career. Even his final years most "Ace" pitchers would love.. I mean, I always considered his time with the Braves from 93-03 to be his peak years.

But, think of the best pitchers between 88 and 08. Likely, Maddux faced them. I can only find where he faced Clemens once.. And Maddux won.. 3-2.

There has been a reluctance, since about 1970, to spot aces against each other. Especially in the WS.

Juan Marichal of the Giants and Warren Spahn of the Braves hooked up with a classic performance. It was in 1962 on July 2nd. The score was 0-0 after 15 innings and Willie Mays finally won if for SF with a home run in the bottom of the 16th. 1-0 was the final score. Marichal and Spahn went the whole distance.

How old was Warren Spahn by this time in his career? How about 42 years old! I can absolutely state that this scenario will never happen again in MLB history. If it does I'm hoping I'm alive to see it!

Never say never. After all.. About 12 years ago, the oldest pitcher to record a win was Jack Quinn in 1932.

I think 90% of us would have said that record would likely stand forever.

Then Jamie Moyer came along.

I'd agree, tho.. Very unlikely. But, in every sport, every now and again, that ageless wonder comes along.

Moyer in baseball.. Tom Brady in football.. Harry Gant in racing..
