They are playing the same amount of games but during the playoffs, players take more risks, and injuries are more common, because the games mean something. Diving for loose balls, jumping higher and faster for a block, driving in to dunk to win a championship.

If theres a play in tournament, games will mean something so players take more risks and play hero ball. There are many bad teams where it doesnt matter if they play hard, its decided by the second quarter. With this play in tournament, some of these games will mean more so some stars will take more risks and play even harder.

I was just saying adding this mid season tournament won't cause more injuries.

Some starters and all stars will play more minutes due to playing for something in The regular season, to win the tournament. And they will play harder and take more risks to win those games. Those starters and all stars are needed to be healthy during the playoffs. We already had enough injuries in the playoffs already and its making the playoffs less exciting. Theres a reason playoff rondo or playoff jimmy buckets exist. Some players slack off during regular season, and take big risks in playoffs.

There is no big prize to winning the mid season tournament. Sure $500k if you win it all. But for players making $50m a year that is nothing. They make that in one game. My hunch is most teams will play it just like regular season games. They will do the same load management as usual. They might even play them less.

You never know, sometimes players get competitive. This makes less load management for some stars, which could lead to more chance of injury when theyre in the playoffs. In a perfect nba, all players play when they can, and play hard, but thats not the case. The product is not good during the regular season when a bad team plays a good team. The game is decided and doesnt matter, so players take less risk, defend less, let the other team get their numbers.

Like jokic sometimes sit out the 4th quarter, if there is a play in tournament and games, the weaker teams rotation players might play their minds off to win the game, thus making it more chance jokic gets hurt, plus more wear and tear.

I get what you are saying. But last season many times you had Boston or Denver playing a bad team often at home and the bad team won. Why, because the bad teams was playing their minds off. Were there more injuries from that? Injuries are random. Just landing on someones foot or turning your knee the wrong way. Often has nothing to do with how hard the other team is playing.

The NBA is looking for some solution to load management. But there is no reward to winning. Bragging rights? Teams don't even care about having the best record anymore. As long as you are near the top you don't need to go all out for the best record. In fact the team with the best record has not been the champ for many years. If you got a boost in your slot in the playoffs or a first round bye. That might motivate them. If this continues after this season my guess is they will tweak it.

Maybe you know this but this tournament is going to go on in between regular NBA games. So Tuesday is tournament night. If a team plays Wednesday or Thursday its a regular game. Friday is tournament game and Saturday and Sunday regular games. Pretty much all of November. Teams can still rest players on the regular games and save them for the tournament if it matters. But if you don't make it into the final 8 teams. You are not winning and the games will just be like regular games. So for 22 teams about half of this tournament will be just like regular games.

I agree 100% with this. The reward has to be an easier path to a championship, or time off from the grind. Money and in-season bragging rights won't be motivators to the players in and of themselves.

They should revise the NBA finals. Make it sudden death. It will raise the stakes.
