Car Registration in Louisiana (Baton Rouge: insurance, legal, drivers license)

I'm a Dutch exchange student who studies at the LSU for 5 months.

Because the public transportation in Baton Rouge isn't the best, I bought a car. But now I'm experiencing big time troubles trying to get the car registered.

My situation is as follows:

- In order to register a car (and to get license plates) you need to have an american drivers license or state ID.
- In order to get a Louisiana state ID or drivers license, you need to have 180 days left on your visa. Which I do not have.

I do have the title of the and I was also able to get insurance with just my Dutch driver's license. But I just can't find any legal way to drive it.

Right now I'm driving it without license plates. But I have no idea what the cops will to if i'm pulled over.

Any advice on what to do next?

The police will impound it, and depending on the officer, they can take you to jail. I wouldn't suggest driving it, or it will spiral into a much larger problem but I do sympathize. The only thing I can possibly suggest would be to contact higher officials who may be able to bypass the policy.

Sell the car to a good friend and have them register it . Reimburse them for the expenses and drive it until you leave . You were going to sell it anyway , just do it earlier .
