I believe the mask mandate is statewide, but are the more rural parts of the Big Island more lax about masks? I’ve been in Albuquerque recently where NM has a statewide mandate and probably about a third of the people are just shunning this nonsense and going without them anyway. Is that becoming true of the Big Island or are they still pretty strict?

People here on the Big Island treat others with respect. Part of that respect has been the continuing wearing of masks when inside stores, coffee shops, etc. Even in those stores that don't display signs requiring masks, everyone just automatically puts a mask on. Yes, even in the rural area where I live. And no-one makes a big deal out of it.

We moved from the BI this past summer and masks were still mandated indoors throughout the entire state. I didn’t notice anyone shunning the statewide mandate in any establishment we were in. Yes, I too think wearing a mask is nonsensical, but it is what it is. At least you are no longer required to wear a mask while on the beach. I will say, when we landed and we’re about on the mainland, it was a surreal feeling not being required to wear a mask. Kinda felt naked without wearing one. You’re required to wear a mask for so long anytime you go indoors and to not have to put one on was like “wow, I got a little freedom back.” It was also nice to see peoples faces again.
