The road that goes East past Richardson Ocean Park and Lehia Beach Park in Hilo, called "Kapoho Coast Road". Is that road off-limits for travelers? I noticed there seems to be a secluded beach at the end of the road. I cannot find any information on this area. Does anyone know any details about this area and is it okay to visit? Or is it trespassing?

Sorry, not familiar with it. But we've found that if we start exploring what looks like a road on a map, sometimes we can't go far because someone has it gated. You'll know that you are going where you aren't wanted by all the "kapu" signs.

It's the road that goes past the skatepark on the very East part of Hilo. A member of another forum said it is a "lawless place" where the locals will "take you out". Imagine my shock. I almost went down that road on my trip to the BI but my instincts told me something wasn't right. Apparently there is a nice beach at the end.

Is that King's Landing? Used to be lots of homeless out there.

IIRC, the homeless were driven off about ten years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if they came back; they gotta live somewhere.

There isn't a nice beach there. We drove down that way last month. Pretty much all locals just hanging out enjoying the ocean proximity. We asked someone if swimming was OK there. He said yes, but we didn't observe anyone in the water.

North, South, East & West don't really make much sense to folks who live on a round island. "The road out of Hilo going past Richardson's" makes sense to locals.

Directions change depending where you are on the island, there's almost always 'mauka' which is 'towards the mountains' or 'mountain side'. There's 'makai' which is 'towards the ocean' or 'ocean side'. Then use some town or landmark to determine the other directions, from Hilo, those would typically be 'Volcano', 'Waimea' or 'Puna'. Oh, and 'Southpoint' isn't a direction, it's a place name.

No particular beach that I know of down that road and last time we looked, there was a fairly large presence of houseless folks.

I think the OP is talking about Shipman Beach/ haena beach.
Easier access from beach rd. in HPP. Yeah, white sand and black
I think only land owners in that area can access via dirt rd past richardsons. I was asked to turn around when I tried.

The area is called "Papa'i". Looks like it's off limits.

You can befriend a Shipman and drive in, or you can hike in from HPP.

If you choose to hike in, don't leave any valuables in your car.

If you can reach it from the Hilo side, I believe it will require a combination of 4x4 and hiking. Don't know about homeless or feral people, the poor quality of the road turned us around.
