Default Not surprised...

Two of our three children developed asthma and one developed vocal cord dysfunction within 6 months of moving to AL. We moved 5 months ago and they no longer have to carry around inhalers.

Thelastmove: But you and your children lived in Tuscaloosa, not Birmingham. The title of the thread says "Birmingham", not "Alabama."

the picture was indeed Birmingham, Alabama. The link below contains the text behind the pic.
Water Secrets Blog: June 2007 Archives

The article below contains the article elaborating on the fact that Birmingham is
ranked #3 for heavy particulate pollution in the USA
al.com: Everything Alabama

The above pic came from "hello Birmingham", a local bama website

Notice the same landmarks.....don't you recognize the same landmarks? Sure you live in Birmingham, ala?

Thanks for sharing the al.com link. I haven't been able to read the 2nd page of the article yet (computer problems, it won't open the page) but I found the following paragraph from the first page interesting:

Particle pollution is generated by automobiles and industry. Birmingham's problem is concentrated around two monitoring stations in industrial areas of North Birmingham and Wylam, where Interstates 65 and 20/59 converge. In the fall and winter, Birmingham's hills and valleys tend to trap pollution in those areas.

I didn't realize that Birmingham's hills and valleys (one of the traits I love) is a cause of problems. I wonder if that is true about particles being only trapped in the fall and winter?

Nope, happens in summer too. I think the reference may be to temperature inversions, which layer and stagnate the air more than it would be otherwise. Although DW loves B'ham, we ruled it out as a place for our residence because of the pollution, taxes, and general costs. Besides, we been there, done that. Got the T-shirts.
