It's really working. This is Woodfin's best accomplishment and will hopefully stand out above any particular development... most of which Bell would probably take credit for anyway.

That's outstanding. Hard to believe that anyone would vote for one of those hacks running against Woodfin. I mean, Scales had multiple indictments for fraud before plea bargaining her way out of it.

Good news

https://www.bizjournals.com/birmingh...bloomberg.html

A Birmingham-based apprenticeship and internship program is receiving a sizable financial boost.

Bloomberg Philanthropies is allocating $2 million to Birmingham Promise to expand the citywide program. The gift is part of an overall commitment of $25 million by Bloomberg Philanthropies to prepare young people for well-paying jobs and help them recover from disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Similar apprentice-style programs based within businesses as well as workforce training programs housed at high schools will share a $25 million allocation from Bloomberg. Other cities receiving funds include Atlanta, Baltimore, Camden, Charlotte, Denver, Louisville, Providence, Washington D.C., and across Delaware and Texas (Austin, Houston, San Antonio and in west central Texas). This new investment brings Bloomberg Philanthropies’ support of career and technical education programs to $90 million since 2016.

Locally the funds will be used to continue paid internships for Birmingham students in finance and insurance, health care and life sciences, energy and engineering and digital technology. The Birmingham Promise initiative has partnered with more than 80 local employers to date.

“The investment from Bloomberg Philanthropies is simply game changing for our community,” said Mayor Randall Woodfin. “I have prioritized investing in young people from the very beginning. It is the ultimate validation of those efforts to have our local investments matched by a national organization such as Bloomberg Philanthropies. We look forward to leveraging this investment to enhance, expand and deepen our efforts to support our city’s next generation of talent.”

Birmingham Promise has two big purposes. First, it provides tuition assistance for graduates of Birmingham City Schools who attend public colleges in Alabama. Second, it has an internship and apprenticeship program where high school seniors gain work experience while earning money and academic credit.

Since 2020, almost 800 high school graduates have received financial support + success coaching in college. Over 150 students have had apprenticeships, and an addition 100 student apprentices are expected to be placed in jobs next spring.
