HI Every one,

How good is the computer science program in UA @ Tuscaloosa, my son wants to go there though he has a high GPA, I mean online search neither the university nor the program is ranked even averagely.
Also, Tuscaloosa seems to have a high crime rate, is it a safe town to love in, or is it bad and good neighborhood. How safe is the campus and the campus area. are there better towns in its suburbs?

Thanks for the detailed response.
Sincerely,

I'd choose UAB over UAT. UAB has a fantastic relationship with the Innovation Depot, an outstanding incubator program.

Don't know how it's rated, but I've heard it's good. Look into UAH. And maybe Auburn.

Are you restricted to schools in Alabama?

Don't know how safe or dangerous Tuscaloosa is.

As someone who literally just graduated from Alabama in Chemcial Engineering this past December, don’t bother with “rankings”, they are absolute nonsense and tend to be random in nature, they will get a quality education at Alabama. Tuscaloosa in general is moderately dangerous, but the campus and the rest of student oriented locations like the Strip, Midtown Village, and Downtown are super safe (except University mall… DO NOT go to University mall, do your shopping somewhere else or just go to the Galleria in Birmingham). I was fairly comfortable walking around at night on campus. There are also a ton of student oriented apartments (that ONLY accept students) that are super safe. It’s all a matter of common sense really, you’ll know when you are in a not so good location. I’ve lived on Campus, Midtown Village (behind the mall) and Northport. South Tuscaloosa along hw 69 seems like a pretty solid area, Northport is hit or miss and I’ve heard little problems about Cottondale

University of Advancing Technology? Never heard of that before now, but the OP is looking at UA.

I don't know anything about that specific program at UA, but UA is a well-respected university, and it's not like your son will be cheated out of a quality education by attending there.

Most college towns have higher than average crime rates because you're concentrating the highest crime demographic (18-25) into a small area. If attending UA, crime is not a serious concern.
