If I sound ignorant, please forgive my post. I know there are places that are very racist and I will be traveling as a single, hispanic female to Springville and Wetumpka, Alabama sometime in June or July. Should I be worried or wait until my boyfriend can come with me? Or, do you think I will be fine? thank you and again I apologize if I offend anyone.

I'm not sure what kind of problem you're anticipating, but I can't imagine you'd have a problem. I'm assuming you speak English well? If not, you could run into trouble communicating. What brings you to Springville and Wetumpka? (Two odd places to be the focus of a trip).

Hello and thank you for responding. Yes, English is my first language (and I can use my big girl voice and speak quite eloquently <<joke between the boyfriend and myself>>). That issue shouldn't be a problem, I'm more concerned with safety. Unfortunately, the focus of my trip are to the prisons in both of those cities. I have family that I haven't seen in about seven years that I'd like to visit before we move. Again, thank you.

You shouldn't have a problem at all. Springville is a nice small town about 30 minutes east of Birmingham. Wetumpka is a small town about an hour south of Birmingham. I know the South gets a bad rap based on history, but the problems like I think you're fearing really aren't an issue at all.

You might want to stay in Birmingham since it is central. I don't know if Springville even has a hotel, and Wetumpka might not, either. Oh, and in June or July, remember to bring your summer clothes, It will be sweltering hot. (Never mind, I see you're from San Antonio. You know all about sweltering hot).

I want to ask you the same question about San Antonio. I have heard mix opinions. I am a parent of a student who's teacher wants to bring a group to your town. I have heard that there is some racisms towards whites with alot of crime. What say you?
