Rape in Boise is reported by as 57 per 1k and the national average is 25 per 1k. Idaho as a whole has more rapes than the national average. Can any one tell me why I should move my family to a place with more
sexual assault than Oakland and Washington DC. Again, these numbers are found searching on , crime, Boise"

Is someone telling you to move your family? If so, whom?

I'm not sure about the stats at area vibes, hearing of a rape in the local Boise press is rare.

Here is some info from that website. Maybe Oaklands are a little lower because the person who was raped was also murdered.

Are you telling us you would rather live in a city where you are 1492% or 1038% more likely to get murdered?

Quote:
Oakland, CA is 229.5% more dangerous to live in than Boise, ID.

In Oakland, CA as compared to Boise, ID you are: 5704.3% more likely to get robbed, 1492.0% more likely to get murdered, 1602.4% more likely to get your car stolen.
DC's is actually higher than Boise's at 61.

Quote:
Washington, DC is 132.5% more dangerous to live in than Boise, ID.

In Washington, DC as compared to Boise, ID you are: 2596.6% more likely to get robbed, 1038.3% more likely to get murdered, 389.9% more likely to get your car stolen.
For another comparison check out SLC's stats...107 for Rape.

Quote:
Salt Lake City, UT is 215.1% more dangerous to live in than Boise, ID.

In Salt Lake City, UT as compared to Boise, ID you are: 956.5% more likely to get robbed, 162.9% more likely to get murdered, 892.2% more likely to get your car stolen.

Let's see, based on City-Data's own web site for each of the three cities you mention:

Based on 2012 crime statistics, (the latest available), the rape rate per 100,000 population:

Boise, ID at 35.4
Oakland, CA at 67.8
Washington D.C. at 37.3

I don't know, nor have every heard of , but I believe CD stats.

Looking at your three cities for total crime statistics:

Boise, ID at 195.3
Oakland, CA at 1019.0
Washington D.C. at 528.1

It does not make someone a troll to ask a question of this sort. In the past, other potential relocators have asked similar questions, especially about the high number of registered sex offenders in Idaho, because our justice system here forces registration at a much lower threshold than other states.

Likewise people will report "rape" more often to the police here where when I was on patrol in Los Angeles, there were quite a few sexual assaults and rapes that we knew went completely unreported. That's the danger of statistics...without contextual data they can be very misleading.

1. Springfield, MO 172.3
2. Pueblo, CO 152.7
3. Anchorage, AK 136.2
4. Lansing, MI 111.5
5. Amarillo, TX 108.9
6. Salt Lake City, UT 107.2
7. Cleveland, OH 107.1
8. St Louis, MO 104.5
9. Minneapolis, MN 97.2
10. Rockford, IL 96.5

Maybe you should just move to one of these cities....

1. Cape Coral, FL 4.3
2. McAllen, TX 4.4
3. Oxnard, CA 4.9
4. Fresno, CA 10.4

I notice a pattern with this. Alot of the cities recording high rates of rape are mainly in places with very cold winters(Minneapolis, Lansing, Anchorage, Cleveland, Salt Lake City, St. Louis, Rockford). The cities with low rates of rape, it is often warmer cities and southern cities.

And the FBI stats for rape, effective for 2013 and going will most likely be greater. The new definition reflects an expanded interpretation of what types of penetration constitute rape and includes male and female victims.

And not all LE agencies will report as required, so as Sage pointed out, ".without contextual data they can be very misleading."

And most reports, including the FBI stats most view, do not include clearance and arrest data.

Sadly, the suicide rate is very high too. Especially among the young people.

I think there are a few reasons. The "Wild West" mentality of western states and a generally less civilized populace, the lower presence of police, a skewed male-female sex ratio, the fact sex offenders are often driven into sparsely populated states like Idaho and Montana, etc.

Rapes are reported more in Idaho cities than in other states.
The lack of reportage tends to skew stats downward, often giving false numbers.

And since more rapes are reported, more rapists here are convicted. The ones you need to worry about are the rapists that haven't been caught.
