26 was a snake to drive in the winter 50 years ago. ice was the problem back then too.
The road takes a dive down a gulch at one spot, then goes right back up. That was always so slick I used to pray it wouldn't grab me every day from December to March.
The only way I could keep the car on the road was to slow down to 10 mph before the drop. Anything faster took the steering away and would put a vehicle sideways in the wink of an eye.
Just like an Olympic ski jump.
I drove it daily to work for about 9 months at 6 a.m. when there was no traffic, and I was sure glad there wasn't.
