Hi everyone,

We (family of 4) currently live in Colorado, and generally like the climate, outdoor nature, and a number of other aspects of life here.

Unfortunately, however, the illegal immigrant situation is getting out of control, the community becoming less safe, and the politics tilting further and further left.

We want to live in a locale that is not a sanctuary city, and has a strong republican majority. Idaho came up as a potential place to check out.

Is it correct that the overall political climate in the greater Boise area is closer to Texas or Florida than to California or Colorado?

While Boise isn't remotely like I-25 in CO or the CA coast it isn't a stronghold of libertarian / conservative that other parts of the state are. It isn't terrible but it isn't perfect. Having said that the quality of life in Boise and ID in its entirety is far superior to that of CO. If you can absorb the high cost of living come on up we could use as many liberty minded people as possible to offset the alternative coming in. Check out the suburbs outside Boise proper and also check out Sandpoint / Coeur d’Alene as well. Do you have solid employment and or can work remote up here? That's going to matter. Also keep in mind Starlink is very good up here so you could in theory work from about anywhere.

Boise proper is liberal, perhaps the most liberal city in Idaho, but more like old school liberal than new school progressive (think Bill Clinton vs. AOC). We are not a sanctuary city, but rather a Welcoming City for refugees here legally via the proper channels. Boise is very safe and low crime, during the Defund the Police movement the city increased the police budget. This may change as more of the extreme types move here from the coasts, though my sense is that these folks are mostly going to CO where weed is legal.

If you want solidly conservative local government near Boise then stick to the suburbs: Eagle, Kuna, Star. Meridian is still conservative, but I think it's trending purple. Nampa and Caldwell are their own cities (not suburbs) that are more conservative than Boise, and they are also more diverse at 26% and 41% Hispanic respectively.

You may also consider WY.

My opinion: Boise, and Idaho, have been a beacon for people wanting to move out of the extreme liberal areas of the country for a more conservative city and lifestyle. Unfortunately, even though the people moving in say they don't want to change anything, just by growing the city so fast, they change things. I think they tend to vote more liberal than most long-term residents just by their own societal and personal histories. The Boise metro is very purple, but the extreme liberalism has not gotten a foothold here. The local news is pretty balanced in it's reporting of events, so people get a pretty balanced story to build their own opinions.

As AnythingOutdoors mentioned above: "Nampa and Caldwell are their own cities (not suburbs) that are more conservative than Boise, and they are also more diverse at 26% and 41% Hispanic respectively." Nampa and Caldwell are also getting the majority of the refugees from other parts of the world, because the towns somewhat have the lowest housing costs. Still, there are certainly nice areas for all in both cities.

You could also look at Idaho Falls and Pocatello as other smaller and more conservative metro areas on the east side of the state.

Sorry, there are undocumented aliens in Idaho, too. There is lots of agriculture and many of them are here to do the farm and dairy work

Regardless of how conservative Idaho is overall, Idaho is still hobbled with the 9th circuit court which is California liberal and can over-ride Idaho law.

And that is a travesty for us to be in the 9th circus court region.

Of course there are undocumented aliens everywhere, however the degree, rate of influx, and percentage matters.

I think we've answered your general questions. Is there anything specific about the Boise metro you'd like to know?

The political climate in Boise is the same as CA. The mayor of Boise is besties with Newsome. There are also illegal immigrants in ID, the Gov flew them in all over ID. I've seen a man with like a Nigerian or Haitian accent urinate in my college kids' alley, bathe in canals near homes and he wonders the neighborhood. The amount of people doing this has increased over last 2 yrs. I love ID but trying to get away from the grip of Newsome, and I see politicians in ID letting CA ideas creep in. People love to blame Californians, but the majority that move to ID are conservative. Good luck on your move, I love CO as well.
