not a single book, but here's a short story collection where the stories are about/post apocalypse by well known authors (Stephen King, Orson S Card, etc)

Amazon.com: Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse (9781597801058): John Joseph Adams: Books

Book of Eli
Lucifers Hammer
Alas Babylon
On the Beach
The Last Ship
Earth Abides
Eternity Road
Ill Wind
Day of the Triffids(now a TV show)
I am Legend
Alas Babylon and On the Beach were the first of those I read, way back in high school.

Swan Song owes a lot to The Stand.... I enjoyed both -- I read The Stand in two days, and read Swan Song on vacation. That particular vacation was the one in which I actually ran out of books because it rained so much.

"Down to A Sunless Sea" by David Graham. It was first published in 1981, so it's a bit dated. It opens in October 1985 with a broke U.S.A. in dire straits due to the oil running out in January 1983. The hero is a commercial pilot named Jonah Scott, and he regularly flies U.S. refugees to England. While that night's flight is in the air, suddenly all Hell breaks loose as nuclear war is unleashed. He has to work very hard to find a place to land, as England and France are soon obliterated, and he can't go back to New York as they aren't accepting civilian air traffic. I won't go into any more of the plot. The writing could be better, but the plot is so good that I was able to overlook the flaws.

Yes it is - and a very good, interesting read, if I might add.

Authors are Whitley Strieber and James Kunetka

I just finished Earth Abides and I found it quite compelling, but not as emotional as King's the Stand but better than Swan Song. I also read Lucifer's Hammer, which is the weakest entry in four books with no resanance whatsoever

When Worlds Collide and After Worlds Collide by Philip Wylie and Edwin Baumer (or Balmer)
Hiero's Journey and Unforsaken Hiero by Sterling Lanier

They are all pretty old - post atom bomb, etc, so probably will only be found as used books.
