BPS is truly top notch

Boston Superintendent of Schools Brenda Cassellius' license to operate a school system has expired.

The deadline for the superintendent to take the state's certification exam and get a new license was last Saturday, according to The Boston Globe, which first reported on the lapse.

It's a theme in BPS. Annissa didn't take the MTEL ever. Remember when they had a dean/reverend/street worker selling drugs to kids in English High and it was only discovered because he shot a kid point blank in the skull?

Certain things in Boston don't share in the prosperity and BPS is one of then mostly because it has to do with kids in Boston and the big wigs in Boston are anti- kids/families.

I think a lot of people just think BPS is hopeless at this point. It's certainly not the worst place in the country to get an education but people just compare them to other schools nearby in MA.

Even compared to the great of the county-its not a good school district and has been in decline since Carol Johnson retired-objectively. Whereas many urban district have improved in the same time period. As far as in concerned it's a last resort.

I can only imagine how BPS would be if they had a student population that was normal and healthy for a big city and if they had more traditional high schools. I'd wager itd be the same as it was in 1994-below dismal.

So you don't think the parents play any role in the poor performance of the kids ? It's all just the fault of BPS? Parents play a huge role in their kids education.

Of course they do, but also imagine the challenge of attracting decent teachers to an environment like that where the parents just don't care. It's a pretty hopeless situation that's hard to come back from.

I always thought BPS did attract talented teachers. I recall hearing from someone that a lot of Harvard grads want a bps teaching job to gain experience and then they go on to do something else. Maybe that is part of the problem is getting good teachers to stay there. Most of the teachers I know at bps have masters. They obviously are dedicated to their jobs but there's only so much they can do between 8 and 3 when school is in session not to mention kids are passed along to different teachers throughout the day. Kids are a product of their environments. If things aren't good at home or with their family it's a rare scenario that a teacher is going to save anyone's life.

Parents play a major role but BPS is horribly run and has been since the 1960s.

Good teachers come but they leave due to burnout/incompetence.

And the facilities/buildings totally suck.

Extracurriculars are limited and there's no community support at all whatsoever form the neighborhoods 90% of schools are in.

I think education in Boston is not considered very appealing electorally.
Fixing potholes probably brings more votes than fixing the school system. Considering that ultimately being re-elected is what really matters for any politician...it's hard to see a comprehensive solution to the problem coming soon.

Wow that's news to me that it's been horribly run since the 1960s. Some of the teachers I've known who worked there have been very bright. Usually it's the administration that is bad not the teachers though
