Quite a few have left the N.W. including Idaho and Montana to live in Hawaii. The costs are pretty similar these days. Feels a lot better on the old bones too. Tho I do miss the wilderness and lakes and all, we really don't go hiking and camping anymore. I've met more retirees from N. Idaho than I ever expected.
Who knew ?

Going to visit Hawaii for the first time in January. Just a vacation with my wife. Not a scouting trip for my near retirement and future home, but who knows.

I'm no doctor so can't offer medical advise, all I know is warmer weather suits most older people better. Even in my 30's-40's working outside in Idaho/Montana winters would cause weather related aches. I do have friends still in Id/Mt for one reason or another were not able to leave as they aged and suffer through winter waiting for a warm up. 2 with definite Arthritis issues. When they visit here they say they feel better and stop taking the meds, so who knows.

That's sure the truth! I've lived and worked in both states.
The biggest difference I found between winter in Idaho Falls and winter in Bozeman isn't the snow; it's the cold.

Bozeman's weather comes straight down from the Arctic Circle, and the Rocky Mountains act like a curtain. They mostly stop the cold and turn it eastward, where the cold snap usually ends up in the Yankee states of the of The Atlantic seaboard.

Idaho gets its winter weather from the Pacific, so its coming up from the milder southwest.
Every once in a while, however an arctic storm in the ocean moves downward though. And every once in a while the Blue Northers in Montana will climb over the eastern aide of the Great Divide and seep down into Southern Idaho.

When they hit Montana, the wind and the cold are brutal. Even for an Idahoan who's worked outside in the winter all his life.

Ya can't afford anything here in Bozeman, but I own a place outright on the Big Island - 3 acres. I would rather struggle than live under a land lord....Rents are doubling here....

It really doesn't sound like a good time to move or relocate anywhere as far as purchasing a home at this time.

Montana to Florida I get. But Montana to Hawaii? Way too far, way too expensive.
