Hello!

My wife wants to visit her friend in Houston over the Christmas weekend. She will be staying at her friends place while I decided to round-up a couple of friends and go visit some place around Houston.

My initial plan was to go camping but I have camped only twice till now, both times during summer. I have no experience of camping in winter and no idea about any good places to camp around Houston.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the following:

1. Camping during Christmas weekend. Feasible?
2. Best place to camp around Houston.

Any other suggestions are also welcome. We have been to Houston a couple of times so not really looking to see anything in the city.

Go to the beach. TPWD: Galveston Island State Park

Or go play with gators.
TPWD: Brazos Bend State Park

It's not that cold, or could be considered warm, depending where you're coming from.

Thanks Mikey. Been to Galveston a couple of times so will give that a miss. Brazon Bend State Park, on the other hand, seems interesting. Will check that out.

It's nice. A bit polished, as all the access roads are paved etc. but there are lots of trails and a nice interpretive center, and it's just out of town.

My pick would be Sam Houston National Forest: Sam Houston National Forest, a Texas National Park near Cleveland, Conroe, Cut And Shoot, Huntsville, Montgomery
I would call to double check to make sure it will be open.

Winter camping isn't bad in SE Texas. This is actually when I camp in TX, during the summer I head to the mountains of WY, MT, CO. Just wear lots of layers and a sleeping bag liner to add extra warmth to your current summer bag. If you are car camping and weight isn't an issue, take extra blankets/padding to put under your sleeping bag if you are not using an air/foam mattress.

Some great tips there. I will be getting a air-mattress. I just hope it doesn't rain at that time.

Can I expect many people out camping this time? Or will it be mostly empty?
