My wife and I are leaving for vacation tomorrow. I've camped just about every way possible, from riding a horse into the mountains and sleeping on the ground to using a pickup camper, camp trailer, or similar device. The last few years I have used a 5th wheel trailer. I like a shower and running water, but most of all I want a comfortable bed to sleep in. When I go hunting by myself I use an enclosed cargo trailer and sleep in a sleeping bag on a cot inside, depending on the weather. My wife will camp in a tent, and I will too, but the comfort of a camper of some kind is preferred. Sometimes we travel much lighter and stay in motels, but we both love to camp. I have quite an assortment of camping gear, some of it I bought when I was in high school. We once packed into a local wilderness area and used only what we could pack on our backs. That trip lasted two weeks and while it was fun, I wouldn't do it again.

Sounds like my idea of camping. I'm no Ray Mears. Or Obi Wan Kenobi.

To each his own - but a man who can be counted on to take care of business in all areas of life is my kind of man.

We're going camping again in July. We have a cabin tent, because space is an issue to me. I'm okay with foam pads to sleep on as air mattresses never seem to stay up all night. We use Provincial parks because they have clean showers, toilets and laundry room. We have a coleman stove. No dogs, no electronics/radios.

I prefer the hiking and swimming to the sleeping outdoors. But lounging on a towel reading a book is nice.

Backpacking is simple and elegant. Bring what you need, carry it on your back, go see wild places. There's a personal challenge involved in lightening your pack and simplifying your gear, and it allows you to go further and see more. Car camping and RV "camping" usually winds up cluttered. Too much stuff, can't find things, people all around you; I generally don't see the point. A float trip would be alright if you don't pack the kitchen sink. At least you're away from people.

That said, I'm actually planning on buying a van and making it into sort of a camper for fishing trips and other weekend outings where we're not going too far afield (or for the first night of a backpacking trip if we have a long drive). But for the most part we'd be away from people anyways, and I'll try very hard to keep it as minimalist as I can. Bringing too much stuff becomes really aggravating. Cutting out all the unnecessary junk helps you find out what you really need and what you don't, and I think that perspective is really helpful in other aspects of life.

For me roughing it means Motel 6 instead of Hampton Inn
