If you are going to buy a tool, you should know how it works and how to use it. My reason for advocating practice is so, in a crisis you can handle the situation. Flashing a gun, whether a handgun or a shotgun not being prepared to use it seems like a recipe for disaster. I think of the couple in Saint Louis. In that situation they were facing felony charges.
they took a plea agreement to avoid more serious charges.
When there is a legitimate threat, flashing a gun will not stop the threat. If they don’t retreat by simply flashing gun, the next level of force comes into play. Being comfortable with it, knowing when and how to use it and how to use it without ended up facing prison are paramount to being a responsible owner.
A shotgun has a short range and amounts to “spray and pray.” The chance of hitting something that wasn’t intended on being hit or causing collateral damage are by biggest concerns about a shotgun.
Also, when I carry weapon retention is of utmost importance. When I need it, I have it ready. When someone else is trying to get my gun, they can’t. That is the importance of retention.
Safety, safety, safety is the number one rule of owning a firearm.
