You always hear of the old "strike anywhere" matches. You can't seem to find them anywhere until I came across them online at Amazon.com. Have any of you used these? Are they are good as the old strike anywhere matches? And why the heck can you not find them in stores anymore?
My husband bought some recently. He picked up one box at the supermarket in the aisle where fire logs, charcoal and similar items are found. He purchased the other at WalMart.
What do you mean you can't find them anywhere. Every grocery store around here sells them. Heck you can find them in some of the bigger gas stations too. I picked up four box (1000 match total) brick for five bucks last summer before camping season. They may have been outlawed in your area.
They are the same as the old strike anywhere matches, although I have noticed the sticks tent to break easier. Maybe they started using a softer wood.
Strike-anywhere matches seem to be a little harder to find as of the last few years. Here in Eastern Washington, you can find them, but you have to look around a little, not every store carries them. Bi-Mart, a Northwestern discount chain, generally has them, but many grocery stores only have strike-on-box.
These have been pretty much unavailable in my area for quite some time. Finally came across a few boxes of the Diamond brand in some dinky rural hardware store, but thoroughly unimpressed. They're not all that easy to light, and more often than not, the splint will snap in half. Nothing like the old Ohio Blue-Tips. Still, they can be had on Ebay pretty reasonably, if you can't find them locally.
The availability of strike anywhere matches seems to be regional- some places are awash in them and other places, like where I live, no place seems to carry them. I ordered a case some time ago, the newer ones seem to have smaller tips than the old ones I used 20+ years ago.
