also want to be able to camp and hit the beaches with it with space for a surfboard or jetski or dirt bike.
i've seen some awesome conversion vans like my old high school buddy's bedroom-on-wheels with shag rug on the walls and ceiling, but they are not practical for my purposes.
think i need something more modular and space-saving like a flip-up bed and rubber liner for the outdoor gear/vehicles area. i could just use a porta-potty and camping gas stove and batteries.
i've seen a lot of people in hawaii practically living in their vans and shower and clean up at the public beaches.
with current economic conditions and the rise in unemployment and homelessness, it would be good to be able to use mine as a temporary shelter or bug-out vehicle.
anyone made anything like this or live in their vans?
Who cares this is an old thread.

Our neighbors, both very handy, modified their Mazda mini-van and just returned from a 5 week stealth camping trip across the U.S. They spent one week with relatives and otherwise stealth-camped the rest of the time...they're newly-weds so the very close quarters didn't daunt them...had an awning attachment for expanding space during day, had a porta-jon like small sailboats have and a camping stove and tiny fold up table and two chairs for under the awning for cooking. He said they got 22 MPH on average.

Amazing--they said they had a good time and the pictures seemed to prove it--talk about down-sizing though!

For size and economy look for the 99-03 Ford Diesel. Our old fleet vehicles could get around 20 av and they didn't care how much weight they carried. Amazing stuff considering a 444 or so cubic inch motor.
